I started
training "official" obedience with
Uno when he was about 4 months old. Autumn 2004 we started to
train in so called "kisapentu" group for dogs who aimed to compete
in obedience (in Kotkan Koiranystäväin Seura ry).
As a puppy Uno was a real model student: he learned all the tasks
fast and was very motivated to work. When he gained 11 months age
problems started. Over one year we visited the training field more
or less just to hang around becouse Uno was too excited about other
dogs and all the wonderfull smells. He wasn`t interested about me,
treats or toys at all. So our problem was that I couldn`t reward him
with anything. And who would like to work if isn`t paid for it?
Nowadays Uno has a varying motivation to train. There are days when
he`s VERY enthusiastic to work and days that nothing what happens in
training field interest him at all. At home he`s an ideal obedience
dog: excited and always ready to work. Our problem is that there are
so much extra things and thoughts running through his head that he
just can`t concentrate to work every time.
Uno is soft and very sensitive dog. If I push him too much on the
field he`ll definetly stop working for some time. We must have at
least few about two months total vacations from obedience yearly. I
have to plan our training "seasons" very carefully becouse if I
train too often he looses his enthusiasm. He hardly stands
repetition at all. |

Uno
is a real on/off dog what comes to obedience: when he`s motivated he
works almoust like a thought. He is very precis worker - he doesn`t
really do mistakes and hardly ever I have to fix any tasks. But when
he has his off - season he doesn`t work at all (or "works" looking
like a beated animal).
I have to admit that this dog has really been a challenge for me and
for our trainers. During training session I have learned a LOT of
Uno and myself. I really have had to examinate his signals and
behavior carefully. It has been very interesting to really learn to
understand my dog.
